Brian's "light bulb" moment came during these games, igniting his passion for athletics.

In 1986, Brian made his mark by winning gold in the Under-20 Boys Triple Jump at the Carifta Games. Later that year, he secured a silver medal at the Pan American Junior Championships, signaling his arrival on the international stage. By 1988, Brian qualified for the Seoul Olympics, gaining valuable experience that would propel him into a decade of unparalleled success in the 1990s.

The 1990s were indeed the Wellman decade for Bermudian sports. Brian set historic firsts and won an unprecedented five consecutive Athlete of the Year awards. He became the first Bermudian to achieve two top-six finishes in the Olympics, with a notable 5th place finish. While the rest of Bermuda celebrated, Brian's relentless drive pushed him to seek further improvement.

In 1995, Brian achieved a historic milestone by winning gold at the World Indoor Championships and silver at the World Outdoor Championships—the first Bermudian to accomplish either feat. Additionally, he set a new world indoor record for the triple jump. Training with legend Mike Conley and forming friendships with former world record holder Michael Johnson, Brian's mindset was always focused on continuous improvement.

Brian Wellman's achievements and character have earned him immense respect in many countries and within the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Known for his exemplary character, Brian was also a showman, often rallying the crowd with his signature hand clapping before jumps.
