Biography:

Joan Hollis is a name known to various generations of Bermudians, each recalling her contributions differently. Younger individuals might recognize her from A&J Sports Cards, while those a bit older remember renting videos from her Church Street store. However, to many, she stands out as a world champion bowler.

Hollis's bowling career began in 1962 at the Lily Bowl, where she competed alongside her father and brother. Her competitive spirit was evident from the start, leading her to enter her first tournament organized by the Bermuda Women's Bowling Association. Although she didn't win initially, Hollis thrived on the competition, which included fierce rivals like Hattianne Gilbert, Rosheene Samuels, and others. This intense competition drove her to rapidly improve.

Within two years, Hollis had progressed from a novice to the captain of Bermuda’s first team to compete internationally. Her determination and skill culminated in 1980, a career peak. She won the American Zone Bowling Championship and went on to claim the world title in Austria, defeating Irene Gronert. Her victory was celebrated back home with a grand reception and a motorcade, showcasing her tremendous achievement.

Hollis continued to represent Bermuda internationally, even as she faced challenges later in life. After undergoing surgery on both knees, she adapted her bowling technique but never gave up on the sport she cherished. Her resilience and passion are hallmarks of her character.

She is celebrated not only for her world championship but also for her role in advancing women's bowling in Bermuda. Her journey from a novice to a world champion serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes.

Her advice to young people reflects her philosophy: "You have to have a goal in life and go for it don’t give up. If you lose, fine, you lose, but you have to learn how to lose in life as well. You can't always win, but you can keep trying." This mindset underscores the importance of perseverance, determination, and learning from both victories and defeats.
