Lloyd James was a cricket prodigy whose batting prowess overshadowed his initial talents as a bowler. His journey in cricket began under the guidance of Dorothy Eve and his father, playing in the Cub Scouts and on "Chile" Simons' concrete patio. Although he started his career as a bowler, it was his batting skills that led him to become one of the most celebrated cricketers in Bermuda's history.

James spent most of his cricketing career with Warwick Workmen's Club, with brief stints at Southampton Rangers and St. George’s Cricket Club. His decision to play for St. George's in the Cup Match was strategic, given Somerset’s strong bowling lineup at the time.

James made his Cup Match debut as a bowler, taking three wickets for 50 runs in the first innings. However, his true calling was revealed the following year when he scored 100 runs in both innings, proving his immense value as a batsman. This performance marked the end of his bowling career as he focused entirely on batting.

In 1959, James scored his first half-century with a 68 in the first innings. His defining moment came in the 1961 Cup Match when he scored a monumental 157 runs, establishing a record partnership with Alfred Hall.
